LORRY drivers parking overnight in roads around Royal Portbury Dock have been accused of leaving the area in a mess.

Water-filled ditches and road verges near to the dock have been seen covered with litter and even items including bottles of urine and bags of poo have been thrown into undergrowth.

The issue is particularly bad in Redland Road and Portbury Way, despite the area being cleared on a daily basis, and concerns have been raised about the potential effects on wildlife living in the water courses.

Easton-in-Gordano Parish Council chairman, Gerry Hunt, whose parish the roads fall into, said: “This has been going on for some time and it is getting worse.

“It is absolutely revolting. I sympathise with the guy who has to clear it up.

“It looks awful in the ditches.”

At a site meeting held at the dock, Adam Wood of North Somerset Council said he would investigate the possibility of installing new rubbish bins at the site as well as look into the possibility of getting double yellow lines painted along the affected roads.

Bristol Port Company representative Sue Turner also said she would contact companies to warn them that the issue is being taken seriously.

The Environment Agency has also be contacted to draw attention to the polluting of the water courses.
