AUDITORS say Avon and Somerset Police Authority is doing good work managing its budgets despite operating under severe financial pressure.
The constabulary is facing one of its toughest ever financial years, with bosses previously speaking out against reductions in its Government funding.
Despite the difficulties, the police authority has been told by independent assessors from the Audit Commission it is doing an ‘efficient’ job of balancing the books.
Inspectors said the authority had ‘put in place proper arrangements to secure economy, efficiency and effectiveness’.
William Wallace, chairman of the authority’s finance committee, said: “The authority is responsible for the �280million police budget and ensuring the constabulary is adequately resourced.
“Undoubtedly the constabulary faces extremely challenging financial constraints over the coming years.
“Nevertheless, the authority and constabulary remain committed to achieving value for money and providing a service that meets the expectations of the communities of Avon and Somerset.”
