WORK will begin today (Thursday) on installing new play equipment at a Portishead beauty spot.

A dilapidated boat-shaped climbing frame at a play area at the Lake Grounds will be removed and replaced with a new, ship-shaped feature.

New safety matting will be installed under a set of toddler swings and along the access path.

North Somerset Council also hopes to replace the safety surfacing under the larger swings later in the year if budgets allow.

Work will start today, with the installation of the new boat due to begin on Monday.

It is hoped the work will be complete by the end of the month, weather permitting.

Last month, a petition was launched by a group of Portishead mums calling for changes to be made to the play area, which they thought was ‘shameful’. This included asking for new safety matting to be installed due to the fact the current surface becomes slippery and boggy when it rains.
