Proposals to build a new estate with 156 homes, play areas and an internal road network in Barrow Gurney have been submitted to North Somerset Council.

Crest Nicholson has applied for planning permission to build two developments – one comprising 46 homes and the other 110 – on the old hospital site in Wild Country Lane.

English Care Villages had previously planned to turn the site into a care village but the company was unable to find the money to progress with the development.

Councillors in Barrow Gurney have raised fears about the proposal which will double the size of the village and put added strain on nearby schools and health services.

Barrow Gurney Parish Council claims the housing estate would be unsustainable and needs substantial infrastructure investment.
