A proposed 10-home development in Backwell has been dismissed by planning officers.

The plans for land adjacent to Summervale, in Moor Lane, were submitted to North Somerset Council in August last year and were opposed by Backwell Parish Council.

The parish council said the proposals should be refused because the development was not included in its neighbourhood plan, which lays out where it wants homes to be built in the village.

North Somerset Council has this week refused to give consent because the site is also not included in its own planning strategies.

A planning officer said the development would also detract from the village’s character.

They wrote: “It (the housing estate) would represent an intrusion into open countryside where development is strictly controlled to protect the character of the rural area and prevent unsustainable development.”
