A pop-up library has opened in Pill while the village’s facility closes for a refurbishment.

The Pill Salvation Army church, in Heywood Road, is hosting sessions from 10am to noon and 1.30-5pm every Friday while the village’s library, in Underbanks, and children’s centre are merged as part of North Somerset Council’s community access review.

Although the review’s primary focus is to reduce costs, the council is investing £820,000 to improve its community buildings.

The library will be closed until July 11 to allow the building’s interior to be redesigned and an outdoor play area created.

Pill Salvation Army Corps officer, Lieutenant Nick Ward, said: “The Salvation Army has got a proud history of fighting homelessness, so when the village library faced the prospect of being homeless we did what we do best and provided a home.

“Our first day as a pop-up went really well.

“It was nice to see so many familiar faces from the village stopping by to grab a book and the rhymetime session with parents and toddlers was good fun.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming even more readers, young and old, in the coming weeks.”

Yatton Library also closed at the weekend to allow its children’s centre to move in and it is not expected to reopen until August 14.

The council’s community access review also means Congresbury Parish Council will take over the management of its library service.
