NORTH Somerset Council has agreed to provide more than 650,000 toward the cost of maintenance work on Clevedon Pier.

The move was agreed at a meeting of the authority’s executive on June 26.

The money will make up a substantial proportion of the 797,601 needed to fund the repainting and renovation of the Grade I-listed structure’s ironwork, which is in desperate need of repair.

The remaining amount will be covered by the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust, which leases the pier from the council.

It is hoped the creation of new visitor facilities at the seafront attraction will enable the trust to contribute much more toward maintenance costs in the future.
