Portishead Open Air Pool hosted its eighth annual inter-school gala on July 11, as pupils from the town's five primary schools competed in swimming races.

More than 300 children from years three to six took part in 88 races, and it was High Down Junior School which claimed the overall title.

The school's swimmers won an impressive 24 gold medals, plus 12 and nine of the silver and bronze variety respectively.

Pool trustee Barbara Thatcher said: "The inter-schools gala at the open-air pool is the only opportunity many of the Portishead junior school children have of experiencing a competitive swimming event.
