Families braved drizzly conditions at an annual Friends Of Herbert Gardens celebration.

The group held its picnic in the park at Herbert Gardens where people of all ages enjoyed a teddy bears picnic and took part in games including whack-a-rat, hook-a-duck and a coconut shy.

There was also plenty of interest in guessing the weight of Oscar the dog and the number of sweets in a jar.

Gerry Small, chairman of the Friends group, said: “Children had great fun with the three-legged race and sack race, and riding a parent’s back for the piggyback race.

“Portishead Concert Band stepped in at the last minute after a cancellation by our advertised band and gave a splendid performance.”

The Friends Of Herbert Gardens helps to maintain the park and hosts other regular events including an Easter egg hunt and Halloween celebration.
