Hundreds of people flocked to Portishead High Street last night (Monday) to see the town’s Christmas lights illuminated.

A big crowd enjoyed the ceremony, which kicked off the festive season in style.

BBC presenter Jemma Cooper was the master of ceremonies, as Father Christmas arrived on a sleigh also carrying elf Morag Van Eker, carnival queen Lottie Maggs, carnival princess Elizabeth Logan and flower princess Charlotte Radakin.

The honour of switching the lights on was bestowed on Matt and Rosemary Westley – the popular owners of shop Morgan Westley, who will retire in February.

The pair were awarded a Dartington crystal bowl by Mr and Mrs Brian Newman – who were on the Christmas lights committee in the 1960s – as a token for their efforts for town.

The display was backed by a £8,500 grant from Portishead Town Council, and thousands more were donated by generous businesses.
