Council bolsters fleet of gritters... and gives them funny names

The fleet of gritters, which will salt North Somerset’s roads, has been bolstered, with ‘round-the-clock’ coverage promised by council bosses.
North Somerset Council has agreed a five-year deal with Skanska for the six gritters, which will be kitted with the latest technology and will be available, if needed, 24 hours a day.
The gritters, which are humorously named after places in the district after a social media poll, are called Weston-scooper-Mare, Burrrrrington, Portispread, Nailski, Sleetholm and Bleadon-Cold.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, the authority’s executive member for highways said: “It’s nice to inject a sense of humour with the naming of the gritters, but since autumn has arrived, our highways staff are on duty 24 hours a day – including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
“Our six gritter lorries are on round-the-clock standby and can be called out to grit main routes with just two hours’ notice.”
