Somerset has appointed a new High Sheriff.

At a ceremony held at Wells Cathedral, Johnnie Halliday was appointed as the Queen’s legal representative in the county for the next year.

High Sheriff Halliday said: “This is a great honour, and I look forward to serving all parts of Somerset and supporting all elements of the judiciary and police.”

He said his particular focus would be to ‘provide continuity with the great start that Denis Burn has launched’ through the Somerset Crimebeat Trust Unlocking Potential initiative.

The new High Sheriff said: “This is a proven programme aimed at 13 and 14 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“It encourages those who receive less support at home than their peers to find pathways into apprenticeships by working with schools, colleges, parents and guardians to improve the self-confidence of this generally underperforming group and motivate them into finding rewarding futures.”
