Environmental activists in Nailsea have set up a new group to raise awareness of climate change.

In response to the climate emergency humanity is facing, a new group has formed under the banner of Extinction Rebellion (XR).

The group was set up by Dawn McGhee and Bridget Page after they took part in Extinction Rebellion's protests across London in May.

Dawn said: "We had both just come back from the London XR protest where I was part of the group that set up the garden on Waterloo Bridge and Bridget had been involved in children's activities at Marble Arch.

"We both agreed we needed to be more environmentally active in our local communities.

"At the moment we have around a dozen people in Nailsea XR and are of course looking to grow.

"With the change of North Somerset councillors in the recent elections, we are more hopeful that more sustainable solutions will be found but we know we can't be complacent.

"Extinction Rebellion is a non-violent environmental activist group."

Extinction Rebellion wants the Government to declare a climate emergency and commit the UK to being carbon neutral by 2025.

It also wants a Citizen's Assembly created to oversee changes.

Nailsea XR is joining Weston XR on Saturday to demonstrate against Bristol Airport's proposed expansion.

Dawn said: "The aim of the demonstration is to bring attention to the environmental dangers presented by the proposed expansion and to point out it is inconsistent with a climate emergency and a target to become carbon neutral by 2030.

"We will be offering opportunities to register objections with the council before the crucial planning committee vote takes place.

"Details of other potential hazards arising from the expansion will also be provided."

Demonstrations will begin outside Nailsea Library at 10.15am or at Weston's Grand Pier at 1.15pm.

Nailsea XR has links with Transition Town Nailsea, which encourages people to become more self-sufficient.
