A Nailsea runner will represent Avon in the finals of the national school athletics championship on Saturday.

Charlie Thornton is the only pupil from Nailsea School, in Mizzymead Road, who has been selected for the Avon team.

The finals take place at the Etihad Stadium, in Manchester, and 12-year-old Charlie will take part in the obstacle relay and six-lap race events.

Charlie came second in the regional semi-finals at the six-lap race in Paignton, beating competitors from Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire for a spot at the nationals.

He also plays football for North Somerset Schools and rugby for Nailsea and Backwell Ravens.

Proud mum Amanda said: “As a family, we are all so proud of Charlie and we have everything crossed for Saturday.

“Charlie loves athletics and is really excited to be going to the Etihad.”
