Anna Lumkin, aged 18, is travelling to the African country in June to volunteer for 10 weeks with Skillshare International.

The charity works in partnership with organisations in Southern Africa, West Africa and India to reduce poverty, injustice and inequality.

Anna, a former Backwell School pupil, needs to raise £800 for the trip - all of which will go towards the charity’s projects.

She has roped in her musical family and friends to put on a festival of drama and music on April 18 at St Mary’s Church in Yatton at 7.30pm.

Anna said: “I’m really excited. The gap year is something I’ve been looking forward to.

“The work will include teaching at schools, raising awareness about domestic violence, organising and running sports and after school events and working with young people and communities on HIV prevention and counselling.

“To raise money I am organising a fundraising music and drama showcase which will include a variety of musical performances as well as some dramatic and comedic monologues performed by local, talented young adults and drama school hopefuls.”

Anna is currently doing a foundation course at The Actors’ Workshop in Flax Bourton and hopes to get into drama school after her gap year.

Skillshare International is Government-funded and passes on the skills and knowledge needed to access healthcare and works to enable marginalised communities to access education.

The organisation equips communities to meet their basic needs through sustainable livelihoods and empowers individuals to contribute towards development.

Tickets for the showcase are £5 and are available from the church office, in Church Road, or from Anna on 07853 913811 or at anna.lumkin@hotmail.co.uk
