Live music to revitalise town centre

LIVE music and other entertainment events could be put on to help reinvigorate Clevedon’s town centre.

The chairman of the community group, Clevedon Pride, plans to move its members in a new direction after spending the past five years raising money for Christmas lights and improving the look of Queens Square through litter picking and planting.

Now, Jo Lea-Jones is keen to progress the group’s aims and to also work with other organisations in the town to encourage more people to visit.

Jo, who has been chairman of Clevedon Pride since January and was one of the founding members of the group in 2007, said: “Clevedon Pride needs to grow and at the moment we can’t do this by raising 8,000 for the lights every year.

“We want to do more musical events and get more going on in the town.

“While the lights are great, I want to try to expand it and do more to make Clevedon a really good place to live.”

Clevedon Pride has recently been granted 700 from the town council to help pay for a stage covering and sound system to allow performances to be put on in Queens Square even when there is rain.

Jo added: “Throughout next summer, every week, we could have someone performing, whether it is just a busker or a bigger group.”

Jo hopes other community groups will, in the future, be able to help raise the 8,000 needed each year to fund the Christmas lights in Queens Square.

She said: “By working with other groups, that would give us more time and resources to put on events outdoors and also at the community centre.

“We want to reinvest in the square to make it an even more pleasant place to walk through.”
