A support group for people with diabetes has received a welcome financial boost thanks to Portishead Lions.

The Portishead Diabetes Support Group was presented with a cheque from the Lions’s Christmas raffle. A second donation to Diabetes UK was also made by the Lions.

There are about 3.7 million people in the UK who are diabetic and seven million who are at high risk.

The support group meets four times a year and welcomes anyone along who wishes to learn more about the condition.

Its next meeting is at 7.30pm on March 26 at the Portishead Medical Centre.

Portishead Lions will be featuring diabetes again at its Lions4Life Open Day on April 6 at the Somerset Hall.

It, along with Gordano Breakfast Rotary Club, is holding the event to publicise the services which are available for people at risk.

There will be free diabetes screening, plus training in the use of defibrillator machines and CPR.
