ailsea Lions has donated £250 to a charity which delivers emergency blood supplies to hospitals.

The club raised the money for the Freewheelers Emergency Volunteer Service (EVS) – also known as Blood Bikes – following a concert by the Avon and Somerset Male Voice Choir.

The service, which is run and funded by volunteers, delivers blood donations to hospitals across the South West via motorbikes.

Volunteers can also transport pathology samples, medication, medical notes and minor surgery equipment to and from hospitals, hospices and care homes.

Freewheelers EVS currently has 70 members and the motorcyclists can be called out during the night, at weekends and on bank holidays, when the normal NHS service is not available.

The Freewheelers EVS is part of the National Association of Blood Bikes so blood from the South West can be taken to anywhere in the country.

Lions president Rennie Wharburton thanked the charity for its vital work.
