OUT with the old and in with the new was the theme for some people visiting an event in Portishead.

A Safe and Warm event was put on at the town’s Methodist church in High Street, which saw elderly residents given the chance to swap old slippers for a new pair.

This was held to try to limit the number of older people who have falls at home due to bad footwear.

The morning also gave members of the older generation a chance to talk to and gain advice from representatives of organisations including Age UK Somerset, Care and Repair, the police and fire service.

Thanks to funding from the Department for Health, North Somerset Council also provided Winter Warmth packs containing items to help vulnerable people keep warm during cold weather.

For more details of the help and advice available for the elderly call Klaus Wagner at Age UK Somerset on 01275 882837 or the council’s energy and health officer Kim Herival on 01934 426686.
