PLANS for a Jubilee Wood in an open space in Nailsea are one step nearer to fruition after the town council agreed to support it in principle.

The Times reported earlier this month proposals for Gaulacre, at Engine Lane, including allotments, a community orchard, wetlands, an informal recreation field and a wooden play area have been chosen by the council’s leisure facilities committee for future development.

The first phase, which will be a recreation area including the wood, is being discussed by a council steering group, which asked the leisure facilities committee on August 22 for a letter of support as part of an application to the Woodland Trust for funding.

The council’s finance and general purposes committee has agreed to put 10,000 towards developing the ten-acre stretch of land but no decision has yet been made how the cash will be spent.

The steering group, made up of allotment-holders, members of environmental group Transition Nailsea, rugby club members and councillors will look into how the plan, drawn up by Bristol-based green space specialists The Next Field, will be implemented.
