VOLUNTEERS armed with black bags and gloves helped to tidy up their towns and villages as part of a national spring clean initiative.

Helpers gathered at Old Mill Road in Portishead on Saturday to litter-pick around the area, filling dozens of black sacks with rubbish.

This was one of a number of sessions held across North Somerset as part of the national initiative, with volunteers also giving their time to help pick up rubbish in areas around Golden Valley Primary School in Nailsea, Watchhouse Hill in Pill and the Salthouse Fields and seafront area in Clevedon.

More than 70 volunteers helped out at the locations across North Somerset with about three quarters of a tonne of litter collected.
