The UK’s only African elephant bachelor group will be formed in North Somerset.

Wraxall’s Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, in Clevedon Road, is home to the largest elephant enclosure in the British Isles.

It will run the European Endangered Species Programme’s (EEP) international breeding scheme, which supports conservation at risk of extinction in the wild.

Zoo owner Anthony Bush: “Our facility includes 20 acres of grazing land and a state-of-the-art elephant house with deep sand beds and hot showers.

“We designed our facilities to be best-in-class for elephant care, using the most advanced protective contact approach to animal care.”

Arne Lawrenz, co-ordinator for the programme, said: “This is a significant development and will play a key supporting role for all other elephant facilities across the continent. Bachelor groups are vital.”
