Father Christmas, along with special guests Libby and Michael, and Cllr David Shopland switched on the festive lights.

During the event, children were encouraged to post their letters to the North Pole and were entertained with a range of performances before the official switch-on at 5pm.

Well-known musicians Doug Fraser and the Salvation Army Band performed Christmas songs and classics for the crowd.

Father Christmas was not the only celebrity who attended the festive event.

X-Factor star and professional singer Kezia Povey also took to the stage.

The 17-year-old from Weston entered the singing competition last year and got as far as judges' homes.

Crowds were also treated to an extract of the improvised tale of Dickensian by Steamed.
