A plaque commemorating the huge sums raised for charity by swimmers has been unveiled.

Every spring Portishead Rotary Club holds its swimathon at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre and it continues to be a success year after year.

The event has been running for 21 years and it has raised £207,500.

A rotary club spokesman said: “The money raised has been distributed to the local community and beyond including 15 schools, 32 charities and good causes, 34 youth groups which includes the brownies, guides, scouts, Portishead Youth Centre and more.

“None of this would have been possible without the magnificent support from the leisure centre staff and the local Portishead community.

“Congratulations to all the swimmers who have ranged from four to 90 years old who, through their individual sponsorship, have raised this wonderful sum of money.”

Next year’s swimathon will be held on March 30.
