Only half of households have signed up to the new green waste bin scheme which will be introduced in a fortnight’s time.

The decision to scrap green bags and replace them with bins has angered many, although North Somerset Council says it is necessary on health and safety grounds.

From March 1 green bags will not be collected and households can put out up to two green bins for each collection.

But to be a part of the scheme people must register their home and pay a £25 per bin fee. The deadline for a £20 discounted charge elapsed in mid-December.

Bin deliveries are being made by new contractor Biffa. Anyone registering now however may not get their bin before March 1.
