A GRANT worth almost 10,000 has been given to a water sports group in Clevedon.

Clevedon Pilot Gig Club has been awarded the money by Sport England to support the development of the club and help finance the purchase of it’s first gig, trailer and safety equipment.

A gig is a six-man rowing boat, traditionally designed as they were almost 200 years ago.

Pilot gig racing has now evolved into a popular sport with 53 registered clubs around the UK.

The club in Clevedon was set up in the summer of 2009 and, following the grant from Sport England, enough money has now been raised to allow the building of its first boat to begin.

Over the past few months, members of the club have been visiting Bristol docks twice a week to train using gigs based in the city.

This has allowed for a core group of rowers to be established so they can take to the water at Clevedon once their boat is complete.
