Scores of people flocked to a football match in Nailsea to pay tribute to Backwell teenager Adrian Porwal.

David Butt, the former manager of Nailsea Athletic Football Club, organised the match between Nailsea Athletic and Backwell Wanderers on October 24 so villagers could remember the popular teenager who was found dead on October 13.

Adrian played football for the club for a number of years. Speaking after the match, Mr Butt said: “As soon as the players heard of the news of Ade they rallied around and wanted to celebrate Ade’s football days with a special match.

“The ideal match was a game against the team where he lived in Backwell and for Backwell Wanderers to provide us with a local derby - and the opportunity for friends to come along and celebrate with us.

“The match ended up 4 - 4 with the lead changing hands no less than four times. For me, as manager, this would have been the perfect match for Ade.

“He would have been the one to score in the final minutes of the game and be the hero. With his pace and goal scoring ability, he did this on more occasion than I can remember. Ade just loved to score goals.”

A large crowd watched the match and the event raised 115 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Mr Butt said: “I would like to thank everyone for making this match possible and all those who supported the match in celebration of the life of Ade Porwal.
