MOUSE droppings and selling meat past its use-by date are reasons two North Somerset businesses were rated zero for food hygiene in 2013.
Every year the Times runs a campaign to highlight businesses which have fallen foul of the basic food standards upheld by the Food Standards Agency – and can now reveal there were just two premises given the lowest rating of zero in the past year in the north of the district.
Costcutter in Avon Way, Portishead, and New Century Chinese Takeaway in Old Church Road, Clevedon, were both rated as zero for food hygiene in 2013.
New Century Chinese was re-rated as a five last month after a re-inspection. Inspectors found evidence of mouse droppings to the rear of the business, as well as dirty areas and a ‘need to thoroughly clean throughout’.
At Costcutter, inspectors found food handwash basins in a ‘filthy condition’ without hot water, evidence of a lack of food hygiene training and several meat products being sold days past their use-by date.

Inspectors visited on November 15, 2013, and found:
? Various food items for sale in the display chiller with use-by dates exceeded including bacon, fromage frais, pork pies, pork sausages, single cream strawberry trifle and mandarin yoghurt. They all had use-by dates of November 13 or 14.
? Wrapped raw bacon next to wrapped cooked chicken portions in display chiller.
? No separation of out-of-date food and shop stock in the rear chiller in the warehouse.
? No hot water to hand basins in toilets (x2) and one hand wash basin in a ‘filthy condition’.
? Access to toilets blocked by tinned drinks.
? Safer Food Better Business not completed and diary incomplete.
? No evidence of food hygiene training for staff or of food safety management procedures in place.
The shop’s owner, Icy Patel, said: “We have rectified that (out-of-date food). It was just a day, it was not much out of date.
“There was nothing serious. It was really unfair, we are not a zero-rated place.
“We had an interview with them yesterday, we told them what we are intending to do.
“We are not a traditional corner shop, we’re a
mini supermarket so we do try to keep the standard up. It’s completely and utterly out of order.”
New Century, Old Church Road, Clevedon:
Inspectors visited New Century in March 20, 2013, and found:
? Evidence of mouse droppings at the rear of the store.
? Need to thoroughly clean throughout.
? Walls dirty and steps dirty.
Inspectors revisited New Century on January 30, 2014, and found:
? Safer Food Better Business up to date.
? Very good records.
? Good food storage and separation.
Manager Fiona Wong said: “I don’t know why he gave us zero, but we are a five now, so we have done the improvements as per the inspector and everything is up to date and of a good standard.
“We have all had staff training and we made refurbishments to the storeroom, cleaned everything and the fridge and freezer is all okay.
