TOWN leaders in Nailsea took part in a worldwide celebration to mark Commonwealth Day.

Councillors, school children, cadets and community groups took part in the event to show appreciation of the values upheld by the federation.

The town’s Commonwealth flag was raised and Nailsea Town Council chairman Clare Hunt read out messages from the Queen and His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, secretary general of the Commonwealth.

Participants were then able to reaffirm their commitment to democracy, development and respect for diversity.

The town joined thousands of people across the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK oversease territories and Commonwealth countries as 730 flags were raised to mark the occasion.
