MUSICAL youngsters from Nailsea have been rewarded for their talent at the Weston Junior Arts Festival.

Golden Valley Primary School sent 30 members of its school orchestra to compete in the junior school orchestras category in which they won first prize, the Music Makers Shield.

The orchestra, made up of children in years four to six, was conducted by North Somerset music teacher, Jenny Heathcote, who works with the orchestra every Tuesday morning.

Adjudicator Mary Trewin, upon awarding the orchestra with a distinction for its performance of the Romeo and Juliet Suite, commented: ‘An impressive school orchestra in terms of numbers, variety of instruments and developing skills.’ More than 60 children at Golden Valley Primary School learn an instrument, with tuition provided by eight visiting teachers from North Somerset Music Service.

Headteacher Kevin Lynch said: “There has been a long tradition of excellent music making at Golden Valley. It is super to receive the Music Makers Shield in recognition of the hard work our school orchestra do.”
