School wins 100 new reads through Times’ Books For Schools campaign

A primary school in Clevedon has been given scores of new books, thanks to generous North Somerset Times readers.
Yeo Moor Primary School is the first to win 100 books through our Books For Schools campaign.
The campaign aims to help cash-strapped schools to provide pupils with more books so they can develop a lifelong love of reading.
The school, in Kennaway Road, has many initiatives to encourage pupils to enjoy reading.
Pippa Gribben, literacy lead, said: “Every Friday in celebration assembly we have a reading raffle.
“Two classes are picked at random and their teachers then choose a reader they have noticed that week – this might be because of the number of times they have read or perhaps they have made a great predication about our class book or even recommended a new book to their class.
“In November we hold a bedtime story evening for our families. Children come back to school in their pyjamas for a bedtime story and hot chocolate.
“Mums and dads come to school too and we have a book fair and information to support reading at home.
“The evening is very popular - we have about 10 teachers staying to read stories and the children choose which story they want to listen to.
“Every class has a cosy reading area and teachers display a recommended book choice for children.
“We also have an author of the month display in our library area.
“We have also created a special area in our library to encourage children to linger and enjoy a good book.
“Our school librarian also runs a reading partners scheme which supports reluctant readers to read every day and a weekly book club to encourage book talk.”
The Times is desperate to give out books to schools which are struggling to find the money to update their libraries.
Now is a great time to have a clear out of unwanted books in time for Christmas.
We are appealing for donations of new and secondhand books, suitable for primary-aged children, or book vouchers so we can give 100 books out to a school each month.
Donations can be taken to our office in 32 Waterloo Street, Weston, to Portishead Town Council office, in Folk Hall, or to Clevedon Community Bookshop in Copse Road.
