A Yatton school has been given 100 new books from the Times to enable staff to add more titles to the library shelves.
Yatton Infant School was selected to receive the titles through the Times’ Books For Schools campaign.
The campaign was set up in October to help schools which are struggling to provide new equipment and resources for pupils due to funding cuts.
Year one class teacher Emily Caffrey said: “What a fantastic surprise for our school to be selected to receive 100 books. This will go a long way to re-stocking our library and book areas.
“Books for Schools is a fantastic initiative and we are so pleased we took the time to be involved.”
Schools were asked to email the Times with details of their reading initiatives.
Community groups, authors and individuals donated books and gift vouchers to the appeal to enable us to give out 100 books to a school each month.
Yatton Infant School runs a number of activities to encourage children to read for pleasure.
Emma added: “We base our literacy lessons around books relating to our topic which gets the children enthusiastic about what they are learning.
“We do fun story-telling sessions in class where we make up our own stories using the language we have learnt from story books and act them out and we use the musical instruments to make up sound effects to bring them to life.
“Often we can be found in our lovely, bright school library researching facts or simply choosing a favourite book to take home to share.
“So the children see reading is for everyone, we invite mystery readers in to surprise them and show them firefighters, nurses, doctors and mechanics all enjoy a good read.”
The Times is running low on stocks so we are appealing for people to donate any unwanted children’s books to the campaign.
We would also love to hear from community groups who would be willing to donate gift vouchers to the appeal.
Donations can be dropped off at Clevedon Community Bookshop, in Copse Road, Portishead Town Council office in Folk Hall, High Street, or the Times office in Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare. Any schools interested in winning some books, can email vicky.angear@archant.co.uk
