A Wraxall school has been named the best in North Somerset for students’ progress, according to data.

Wraxall Primary School achieved well above average progress scores for key stage two (KS2) in mathematics and above average scores in reading and writing.

Schools are awarded scores reflecting their pupils’ progress between key stage one and KS2 exams in three key subjects, taken at the ages of seven and 11.

The school’s headteacher Ben Tucker said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results.

“All of the children worked so hard to achieve them, they are a real testimony to the time and effort they put into their studies.

“Of course, this would not have been possible without the dedication and quality teaching from the staff and the support of their parents, it was a real team effort.”

Wraxall achieved progress scores of 2.9 for reading, 0.5 for writing and 4.6 for mathematics, recognising the improvement students achieved in their final years of primary education

Scores of zero reflect average progress across schools, with positive and negative scores awarded for better or worse improvement in students’ grades.

Five other schools in the Times patch finished in the top 10, including Northleaze Primary School in Long Ashton which came second and Backwell Junior School finishing in third place.

Pupils are expected to achieve scores of at least 100 in their KS2 exams.

At Wraxall, the average grade awarded for reading was 110, for grammar, punctuation and spelling 113, and for maths 110.

The results mean 87 per cent of pupils achieved the expected standard across the three subjects, and 20 per cent were high achievers.

St John Church School came fourth in the list and was ranked as Clevedon’s highest performer.

Headteacher Ian Doswell said: “We are extremely pleased with these outcomes and this is a testament to the hard work of all of the children and staff at the school.

“We are all dedicated to providing the best possible experiences for the children in our care, placing great value on the whole child.

“We are thrilled these fantastic outcomes validate the high standard of education at St John’s.”
