Award-winning poet, author and playwright Owen Sheers visited students in Pill this week to help inspire their love of literature.

Owen thrilled pupils at St Katherine’s School by reading and talking about his work, which has seen him described by The Independent as ‘the war poet of our generation’.

His visit linked to a school topic on war poetry through the generations, which has seen them study works including Owen’s World War One poem Mametz Wood.

Head of English Jo Jefferson said: “As English teachers our aim is to bring great writers’ voices to life. St Katherine’s GCSE students study Owen’s poetry in the exam anthology so to hear him read his work, discuss his motivation and contemplate the futility of conflict was utterly moving and inspirational.

“Students gave mature, thoughtful responses to some challenging content and their questions were considered and relevant.”
