Topping out ceremony

A SPECIAL ceremony was held at Backwell School to mark the completion of the first floor of the new building.

A mixture of wine, flour, salt and oil was added to mortar and used to slot in the brick on the highest point of the building by head teacher Julian Baldwin.

Students who have played a part in designing the new sixth form centre as well as members of North Somerset and Nailsea Town Council who have supported the proposal were invited to the topping out ceremony.

The interior of the building must now be completed and the 2million sixth form centre, which is being built by Willmott Dixon, is expected to be up and running by September.

It will house an auditorium, sixth form common room, dance studio and teaching area. The school still needs to raise around 30,000 to pay for seats for the lecture theatre. To donate to the cause call Backwell School in 01275 463371.
