A Nailsea school has received 100 new books so it can fill its library shelves.
The Federation of Hannah More Infant and Grove Junior School is the third school to receive 100 books through the Times’ Books For Schools campaign.
Evidence shows children who can read are more likely to achieve better in school and later life. Reading for pleasure is also proven to boost health and wellbeing and aid social development.
The Books For Schools campaign was set up to provide more books to primary schools across North Somerset which are struggling to find money for extra resources for their pupils.
Laura Flemming, literacy co-ordinator at the school, said: “We were thrilled to hear we have been chosen to receive the next 100 books.
“Having new material makes such a difference in engaging and inspiring our young readers.
“We urge people to keep donating so that other schools will continue to benefit from receiving such a wonderful gift.”
The school runs a number of initiatives to engage pupils in a wider range of reading materials.
Three children from each class are chosen every few weeks to receive a ‘take time to read pack’ which contains a fiction book, a non-fiction text and a magazine.
Laura said: “These packs are proving really popular and we are receiving positive feedback from parents about how the children are really engaging with the materials and enjoying sharing them at home.
“This does, however, require a significant number of books being sourced.”
A mystery guest is invited to school each week to read to a class. The school is also hoping to start its book exchange club again at lunchtimes where pupils can swap books with friends.
The Times has given out books to Yeo Moor Primary School in Clevedon and Trinity Primary School in Portishead so far.
We would like to thank everyone who has donated to the appeal so far which has enabled us to help cash-strapped schools.
We are keen to give out 100 books to a school each month, but are looking for more donations.
New or second-hand books and gift vouchers can be dropped in to Portishead Town Council office, in Folk Hall, or Clevedon Community Bookshop, in Copse Road.
