FLAME fever hit Failand when children from two North Somerset schools got to meet an Olympic gold medallist at a hockey club.
Pupils from Wraxall Primary and Backwell’s Fairfield School watched world record triple jump holder Jonathon Edwards, being filmed in preparation for the BBC’s Olympic coverage at Firebrands Hockey Club.
The venue is due to host an Olympic Flame hockey festival, organised by the North Somerset Schools Sports Partnership, Bristol Grammar School and the Avon Umpires Association this afternoon (Weds) for 22 schools.
Torch bearer Alison Harris, of Portishead, along with Olympic athlete Suzie Gilbert will cheer on the children, many of whom will be playing hockey for the first time using England Hockey’s quicksticks format.
Fairfield School spokesman Netta Shore said: “This was an amazing opportunity for our children, not only to meet a gold medallist but also to be able to train with Firebrands.”
