A jar full of tar and a diseased heart were just some of the gruesome images children saw during an antismoking assembly.
To support the Stoptober campaign to encourage people to give up smoking, pupils from St Francis Primary School in Nailsea were visited by representatives from Quit to learn about the dangers of the habit.
Pupils saw pictures of a healthy lung and heart compared to a smoker’s organs, a glass of chemicals contained in cigarettes and half a jar of tar which they were told would be in a person’s lungs if they smoked 10 a day for six months.
The children discussed how they could help a family member stop smoking and were then given booklets with facts about smoking and details of support for quitters.
