Pupils at a Clevedon primary school have been given bags full of poetry books after entering a national competition.

Mary Elton Primary School was one of the first to enter the Premier League Primary Stars poetry contest with each school involved being sent a free bag filled with books from authors including Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson.

The books were chosen by the National Literacy Trust as a way of encouraging children’s love of poetry.

To enter the competition, year four pupils had to write a poem on the theme of resilience.

Headteacher Dean Hudd said: “We have seen huge enthusiasm and great talent in entering this poetry competition.

“The standard of writing was exceptional.

“Well done to all our pupils.”

Winning schools will be announced later this month and will receive more top prizes.
