Portishead youngsters gave up their free time at the weekend to make meals for the homeless.

Pupils from Portishead Primary School showed off their culinary skills on Saturday, making packed lunches for less fortunate people.

A team of 27 youngsters worked together to make 120 picnic packs, which contained sandwiches, fruit and snacks.

The picnics were handed out in Bristol on Saturday night as part of the Street Life Sarnies initiative.

The packs also included heart-warming messages to cheer up people down on their luck.

A school spokesman said: "The parents kept an eye on hand-washing and empty bread bags but other than that, we let them get on with it.

"The kids wrote some lovely messages to go in the packs.

"They are a pretty cool, competent and caring bunch and now they can add catering to their CVs too."
