Portishead in Bloom has enlisted the help of school pupils with a major art project it is carrying out this year.

The group wants to make an art creation in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Poppies are the theme of the work and Trinity Primary School has collected 2,000 black bottle tops from Marks & Spencer which it has passed on to the group.

Portishead in Bloom aims to create a ‘river of poppies’ in Jubilee Park, with larger versions at the sail roundabout representing the people who gave the lives during the war.

Judith Burrill, who is helping to run the project for Portishead in Bloom, believes if everyone does their bit then the project will be very successful.

She said: “We have three nurseries and four schools wanting to make poppies in commemoration of 100 years since the end of World War One in November.

“We are fortunate in having offers of discounted or donated goods in wood, glue, and paint from our local suppliers Homebase, Carey’s, Screwfix, and Travis Perkins.

“We are however short of people to cut out the templates of the poppies.

“Anyone who has a band saw or jigsaw should be able to cut exterior plywood. We have the shape and we will provide the wood.

“This is a huge community project and the numbers have now multiplied into the thousands.

“We still need lots more bottle tops any colour will do because we may have to spray them.

“If each child collects seven red tops we would reach our target.”
