Children relished the chance to dress up as their favourite fictional characters to celebrate World Book Day.

Youngsters from schools across North Somerset donned costumes inspired by the heroes and villains from their best-loved novel to mark the occasion, which encourages children to read more literature.

Revered titles such as Peter Rabbit, Harry Potter and Alice In Wonderland inspired many costumes, but some children opted for something a little more creative.

At Nailsea’s Kingshill Church School, pupils transformed into pirates, robots and a toilet, while Where’s Wally and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid made an appearance at Wrington Primary School on Thursday.

Mythical creatures were brought to life by pupils at Backwell Junior School, and Thomas The Tank Engine chugged into Yatton Infant School.
