Students hold bake-off to celebrate vegetarian week

Keen chefs from Nailsea School celebrated National Vegetarian Week with a meat-free bake-off.

More than 40 year 10 students who are studying for the food preparation and nutrition GCSE took part in the challenge to prepare a vegetarian dish.

Students created a variety of dishes including spinach and butternut squash lasagne, griddled halloumi, strawberry and black pepper biscuits and home-made ice cream.

Food teacher Catherine Hounsell was really impressed with the teenagers’ creations.

She said: “The standard was really very high, it was a great competition and opportunities like these are a terrific way for students to get experience, particularly in time for their GCSE practical exam.”

First place went to Rebecca for her bean burger in a homemade bun served with hand-cut wedges, while Natalia took second place with her chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.

The recipes will be used to create an online recipe book.
