ROVING reporters from two schools have been working to deadlines to produce news reports for the BBC.

Year seven students from Gordano School and pupils from Nailsea School took part in the BBC School Report and spent the day as intrepid reporters.

The team from Portishead covered a range of topics in their news bulletin including the antics of adventurous older people, selfie culture and a weather report focusing on the partial solar eclipse.

Students from Nailsea compiled stories on the general election, justice in Africa, the controversial plans for a Lidl in the town and the science behind the much-anticipated solar eclipse.

The school report is a project run by BBC News and BBC Learning to help students develop their journalistic skills.

During the news day, pupils create video, audio and text-based news reports and publish them on their school website which the BBC links up with.

It was the ninth event this year and 1,000 secondary schools across the UK took part.

Gordano headteacher Gary Lewis said: “Projects like this allow student to develop knowledge and awareness of wider issues locally and nationally, and to create their own opinions of these events.

“It is really important to get our young people engaged in the community and the wider world throughout their time at Gordano, and BBC School Report helps enormously to develop new skills and passions through a fun project.”
