THE number of pupils starting Nailsea School has fallen this year.
Admission numbers to the Mizzymead School have been reduced from 240 to 210 from 2012 onwards due to parent choice and declining student numbers in Nailsea.
North Somerset Council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, councillor Jeremy Blatchford said: “We’ve got a surplus of places in Nailsea, but there is a shortage of places elsewhere such as Portishead and parts of Weston.
“People have far more choice now in what school they go to so there is a lot of competition.
“There is also an ageing population in Nailsea. We’ve know about this trend for some time, but we are expecting the numbers to plateau out soon and then start rising.”
