n EVACUEES from World War Two turned up to lessons in Backwell with gas masks and ration books.

Pupils from Fairfield School dressed in 1930s costume and found out what life was like for children during the war.

They wore evacuee labels, carried gas marks and learnt about rationing and shortages.

Children used their ration coupons to buy sweets and enjoyed wartime packed lunches with jam sandwiches and corned beef. They also filed into an air raid shelter when the siren sounded and cheered each other up by singing songs from the period.
