PUPILS at a Portishead school welcomed members of the town’s lifeboat crew to their classroom for a lesson in water safety.

Among the topics discussed at St Peter’s Primary School, children were made aware of the dangers of playing on coastal mud flats, something that has resulted in full-scale rescue operations having to be launched in previous years.

A school spokesman said: “As Portishead has one of the highest rises and falls in tide in the world and the eighth fastest tidal race, it is important that the children learn about the dangers of the water and how to keep safe.”
