Young chess players in Portishead are preparing to take part in the national finals of a competition next month.
Two teams from St Joseph’s Primary School have qualified for the semi-finals after battling it out with 10 South West and South Wales schools earlier in the year.
A school spokesman said: “This is our 4th time in the EPSCA national championships and we have reached the semi-final twice before, but this time, we found ourselves neck and neck with the best throughout the competition
“The members of the under-11s team came home decorated with bronze medals, and both the under-11s and under-9s will be facing the nation’s top players at the semi-finals in May.
The school’s chess club is free but it is looking to raise £200 to pay for its competition costs.
Any businesses keen to sponsor the club are asked to contact the school.
