More than 1,000 Portishead children will learn about the perils of plastic pollution thanks to a substantial donation.

Portishead Lions Club has given 1,500 primary school children a book about the global issue of plastic pollution in the oceans.

The book, penned and illustrated by Ellie Jackson and Laura Callwood, focuses on animals and their encounters with plastic pollution.

David Fitzpatrick, of the Lions club, said: "Seeing how successful these books have been in inspiring communities to tackle ocean plastic, it was obvious to me Portishead as a coastal town needs to be supporting our schools to teach the next generation to care for our beautiful marine environment.

"The books are perfect for younger people to engage in this issue and with the Lions support we are pleased to bring this project to our local schools.

"We are involved in caring for the environment and we will do everything we can to help the children make a difference."
