A Wrington nursery, which only opened last year, has been praised by Ofsted inspectors to the delight of its manager.

Barley Wood Nursery was created after the YMCA bought Barley House in 2015 and its preschool centre has gone from strength to strength.

Ofsted inspectors visited the premises for the first time in late-September and they published their findings this week.

Barley Wood was rated as good across the board, including in key areas such as care of the children and teaching.

Laura Shields, the nursery’s manager, said: “We’re all absolutely delighted with this first report from Ofsted.

“Our aim is to provide the highest standard of care to give the children who come here the very best start in life, so to have achieved a good Ofsted rating is brilliant.”

Ofsted was impressed by Ms Shields and her team.

Inspector Rachael Williams said in her report: “The management team devises accurate action plans to improve outcomes for children. For example, there has been a keen focus on creating highly stimulating and enticing learning environments.

“The nursery’s safeguarding is effective.

“There are robust systems to ensure children’s safety and security, and vigilant staff consistently implement these.

“Management and staff have a clear understanding of their role and responsibility to report any concerns about a child or a colleague to local agencies.

“(And) children make good progress and staff prepare them well for their next stage in learning.”

The good rating is the second best Ofsted offers, and its inspectors gave tips as to how Barley Wood could become an outstanding nursery.

Inspectors said staff support children’s well-being to a good degree, but more could be done to help children who find it difficult to be separated from their parents or carers.

Ms Shields praised her team for achieving such a good report at the first attempt.

She said: “I’m very proud of the team here, and they should be extremely proud of themselves too.

“They all do a fantastic job and without them the nursery would not be able to provide such a wonderful offering for the children and their parents.”
